Himalayan Salt Plate

May 4, 2011 4 Comments

I received an incredible gift in the mail today—a hand cut block of 200 million-year-old pink sea salt. I’ve seen these before in fancy sushi restaurants, served ice cold as a tablet for raw delicacies. It weighs a ton and, as you might imagine, is deliciously salty and mineral rich. I know this because I gave it a quick swipe of the tongue.

I am eager to set this beast on the grill where it can be used at a cooking surface for meat, fish or veg. It imparts beautiful natural flavors and makes one feel badass in front of guests. There will be a thorough update as soon as the rain stops, at which time I’m going to put some tuna right to it. The salt plate is reusable—easy to wash, naturally antimicrobial and you can buy it here.

Thanks, Andy!

Those salt blocks are great, We catered an event using those for one of the dishes. We heated them under a salamander (broiler) to get them as hot as possible and let our guests cook thinly sliced kobe tenderloin on them at the table. Unfortunately they don’t stay hot for very long but they loved it none-the-less, one solution I read about was putting it over sterno burners or a fondue burner. I have not tried it but it sounds like it would work well.

Looking forward to see what you do with it.
